This year we are offering young people in the Nottingham Diocese the chance to go to Lourdes! If you are not currently in one of our schools then you can still come on pilgrimage with us here at NDCYS!
This annual event sees nearly 500 people from across our diocese journey on pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady in Lourdes, France. It is an incredible opportunity to help serve the sick and less able members of our diocese whilst also meeting new people and learning about your faith.
This year the trip is from the 14th to the 21st of July (dates to be confirmed) 2019. The cost for the week will be around £580 This includes the residential costs, excursion costs and coach travel but not spending money. To be a helper during the pilgrimage students must complete or hold a valid DBS form (formally known as a CRB form) specifically for this trip. It may also be advisable to check that you/your child has a valid passport as applications can take months to complete. They will also need a valid EHIC Card to cover any potential medical expenses.
To be a Helper on the Diocesan Pilgrimage students must:
- Pay the full balance by 29th June 2019
- Complete all the necessary paperwork by 15th June 201
- Complete a DBS Application by Friday 1st June 2019
- Provide 2 referees
- Attend the Lourdes Preparation Day
If you / your child wishes to volunteer as a Helper during the Pilgrimage they will need to complete a DBS (formerly a Criminal Records Bureau) application. This is standard procedure for anyone over the age of 16 working with vulnerable adults. To complete the application they will need to: provide 3 pieces of original documentation to be verified by Fr Simon, complete the forms provided and to complete the online component of the application. Please see the list below outlining suitable forms of documentation (please note that some documents need to have been issued within 3 months/ 12 months of the date that they are verified and that bank statements must have been received in the post – copies downloaded from the internet or printed in branch at the bank are not permitted.) Please note that all forms of ID must show the same address and must be in the same name.
- a UK birth certificate
- provisional or full driving license
- bank statement/ account opening confirmation letter in their own name and address from the last 3 months which has been posted to them
- National Insurance number letter (if issued within the last 12 months)
- a letter from the inland revenue or other government body in their name and address posted to them within the last 3 months or P45/ P60 issued within the last 12 months
These documents are not all required, however the more forms of ID we have, the easier the application process is. We strongly recommend sourcing these documents now to make the application process as easy as possible!
If your son/daughter has not been a helper on the Lourdes Pilgrimage before then they will also be required to provide two referees who will be sent a questionnaire to complete around Easter time. One of these must be the trip leader (Tom Baptist) but the other must be:
“Someone who is not a relative and has known you professionally for a minimum of two years, is aged 21 or over, and is willing to give you a reference regarding your suitability to work as a helper in Lourdes.”
One of these references will need to be Tom Baptist (as the group leader) even if the 2 year requirement is not met. Use the address on this letter to complete the referee section 1.
Lourdes Preparation Day
The Lourdes Preparation Day, for all helpers going on the Diocesan Pilgrimage, will take place at The Becket School (West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG27QY). This is compulsory for anyone who wants to be a helper and to undertake any duties on the Lourdes Pilgrimage. This is a full day event so please ensure that you /your child is available to attend on this date.
Payment/s for the trip should be made either by cheque or by bank transfer.
The NDCYS bank account details are: Account no. 21137883 Sort Code 40-10-07
Please reference the bank transfer carefully with the trip reference LRD18 and your / your child’s full name.
Cheques should be made payable to ‘NDCYS’ and should be posted to the Finance Office in an envelope with your child/ children’s name and form on and should be labelled ‘Lourdes 2018’. This information should also be written on the back of the cheque.
We also advise, if you are a member of a parish, contacting your parish priest as in the past parishes have been very supportive to our young people, often making substantial contributions or allowing students to make appeals or to run fundraisers in Parishes.
As our group is made up of people from all over the diocese we will use an online community to pass information and arrange an online video conference to help you fill out the paperwork. You will receive an invite to join a “Google Classroom” This is a free service but will you require a google account to use it.
